Special Announcement From Tap to Tap:

These are unprecedented times and call for unprecedented actions. The Governor of Virginia recently announced measures to fight the spread of COVID-19 including prohibiting public gatherings of 100 or more people. Because of this, we have decided to make this year a virtual race.  We are committed to this race and excited, but we understand the impact this will cause some runners. Please contact us if you have any questions.  https://www.commonwealthtiming.net/contact.html

Virtual Race to benefit the Capital Trail Foundation and the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund
Between March 30th and April 25th each relay/ruck team will need to run a combined distance of 50 miles. The 50 miles does not need to be run on the Capital Trail- pick any location to run you like. The 50 miles does not need to be run together as a team - Individual runners can run on different dates and courses to maintain social distancing guidelines. Each team member will send their time and distance to the team captain and the team captain will send the team time to us via the following link https://www.commonwealthtiming.net/contact.html. Please include each team members name, distance and time. Once we receive the results we will post them on the website and mail your t-shirts and runner goodies. Ultra runners will do the same. Ultra runners will not need to run 50 miles all at once (unless you want to). Between March 30th and April 25th, run 50 miles and send the results via the same web link above.  You can run 5 miles one day, 10 miles a couple days later - however you decide-  we just need your time for running the full 50 miles.

We wish we could fully express how much we wanted to hold the race this year but sometimes things become out of our control.  We have put a lot of hard work into making it a great event and are excited to do it again next year.  We also realize that some of you may not be interested in participating in a virtual race.  We understand.  If you would like a refund we will be happy to do so.  Please reply to the Tap to Tap Contact at the following link and we will make arrangements to get a refund to you.  We hope that many of you will decide to participate virtually and help support two incredible causes - the Capital Trail Foundation and the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.

Most of all we appreciate that you signed up to run the race in the first place and we pray that you will be safe and healthy during these difficult times!
KEEP RUNNING!

Runner Information

*All information is tentative, pending permitting etc.*
How Does a Relay Race Work?

The Tap to Tap Relay is a 50-mile race that is divided into 10 legs that range from 3.4 miles to 6.7 miles. Runners form teams of between 2 to 10 runners divide up the legs of the race between runners. Each runner will run at least one leg of the race. If the team has less than 10 runners, some or all runners will run multiple legs. The teams choose who runs what leg. Teams provide a team vehicle that drive the runners to their transfer point and picks up runners when they are done running.

SAFETY FIRST

At all times....safety is the first priority!  Whether you are running on the course, driving a team vehicle, exiting a vehicle at a transition point, or taking part in the race in any way, shape or form, please make safety your top priority for yourself, the other runners and volunteers.  There are a few spots where the Capital Trail crosses a road.  As your parents used to say "Look both ways before crossing the street".  Remember...first and foremost....SAFETY FIRST!!!

Course Time Limits
Ruck teams will have a maximun of 13 Hours to finish, running teams (solo and relay) will have 12 hours to finish.
Ruck teams will start in  at 6:15AM, ultra runners start at 6:30 AM and  relay team runners will start  beginning at 6:45AM.

Relay Teams
Teams range from 2 to 10 runners that have signed up to run the race together. When signing up to run the race as a team, runners select one of the team categories listed below.
  • 2 Person Team
  • All-Male Team
  • All-Female Team
  • Co-Ed Team
  • Military and First Responder Team: All Runners are Current Military or First Responders

Solo Runners
We also encourage solo runners to complete the race as an ultra. Solo runners run the entire course.

Ruck Teams
Ruckers can participate just like the runners with teams of 2-10.
In consultation with the Richmond-area ruck clubs, we have set the weight for the ruck as at least 10 pounds for ruckers who weigh under 150 pounds and at least 20 pounds for ruckers who weigh over 150 pounds. You are welcome to carry as much weight as you would like, but it needs to be at least the required minimum. Ruckers can also sign up to run the entire event as an Ultra.

Team Captain
Each team will have a team captain who will be responsible for picking up race materials for the team  and will be the point of contact  if the race staff needs to contact your team.

Team Vehicle
Teams of 5 or fewer runners provide one support vehicle that carries all runners.  Teams of 6 to 10 runners will provide at least two team vehicles that carry all runners (or one really big van!). The team vehicles carry team members to their transfer points and pick up runners after they finish running. Team vehicles are also good for carrying food, water, changes of clothes, etc.
Relay and Ruck teams will be self-supporting once they leave the start line.  That is what "team" is all about!

Required in every vehicle:
  • At least one mobile phone per van with a list of all team mobile phone numbers
  • Emergency first aid kit: antibiotic ointment, athletic wrap, band-aids, cold packs and pain medicine ect.
Suggested  supplies that you should carry in your vehicle may include: (But is not limited to)
Clipboard/Spreadsheet for team time log
• Cooler with ice
• Sports drinks
• Water
• Food/snacks/energy bars/gels
• Maps
• Printout of runner legs ---
• Marker, paper, pens
• Wet wipes, paper towels
Trash bags
Cell Phone
• Camera
• Driver license, ID
• Flashlight
First aid kit
• Plastic bags for wet clothes, icing injuries, trash
Bug spray

We strongly encourage you to carry a couple of runner belts in order to make a swift transfer of the race bib number/timing chip when one runner finishes a leg and passes the number to the next runner.  Each team will receive one bib number with timing chip affixed. All runners on the course must wear their number at all times.  Your bib number/timing chip must transfer from one runner to the next at each transition point.

Carry everything you will need in your van in order to get your team to the finish line!  Once a ruck or relay team leaves the start line, you are self-supporting.

Suggested extra runner supplies
  • Cell Phone
    Bandana/cloth for dusty roads
    Camera
    Driver license, ID
Plastic bags for wet clothes, icing injuries, trash

Race Timing and Results
The race will be chip timed with one timing chip per team or solo runner. Runners and teams will be assigned a wave start time when they pick up their race packets. Ruckers at 615AM, Ultra Runners at 630AM and Relay Teams at 645AM.   Race results and photos will be available at www.commonwealthtiming.net after the race.

Parking

There will be no parking at Billsburg Brewery on Race day.  Parking before the race will be at Historic Jamestowne, located across the road from Billsburg.  Be very careful when crossing the road.

The transition points are only for dropping off a new runner that is preparing to run the next leg and picking up the runner who has just finished a leg.  Drop your runner, pick up your runner and move on.  Due to limited space the transition points are not for  parking.  There are some transition points that have more parking than others but some have very little to none.  No parking, at any time on any road.
Although the aid stations are for ultra runners, we will have one aid station that is an all-purpose aid station for ultra runners and relay teams at Indian Fields Tavern, located approximately at the half way point.  Please stop in and say hello to the great folks at Indian Fields Tavern (one of our great sponsors).

Ultra Runners

Although we will have a number of aid stations throughout the course, we strongly encourage ultra runners to make use of a support team.  No one can take better care of you during the race than your own support team.  There is no question that your success depends on mental and physical readiness but a support team can make all the difference!  We also encourage ultra runners to make use of pacers along the route.  A great support team will help you run a successful race.
